CalfSuccessful Calf Rearing

Calf rearing is one of the most important profit centres of the management system on every successful dairy farm. The potential of calves is never better than in the first 12 weeks of their lives, with the ability to grow at about 1.0kg/day in the first 6 weeks if all aspects of health and management are optimised.

The early goals of a successful calf rearing system must be to:-

  • To develop a strong immune response system
  • To stimulate rumen development
  • To achieve a low stress weaning by 6 to 8 weeks of age
  • To maintain an economic feeding and management system
  • To encourage optimum growth.
